Don't Be Pro-Ana

As if the pictures of Lindsay Lohan and Nicole Richie aren't scary enough, apparently there's a whole movement out there extolling the virtues of eating disorders. I found this article very disturbing.

I read an article that Argentina [or was it Brazil?] is actually passing a law that stores have to carry clothes in a range of sizes, including the larger ones. Apparently, their concern is for the growing number of anorexic girls in the country, and the fact that stores were refusing to carry larger sizes because they don't want "that kind" of clientele.

The pressure on women to be one size, and an unhealthy one at that, is so crushing and pervasive, isn't it? Ugh.

Thanks for sharing the article!

That movement has been around for a long time now, actually, complete with websites devoted to advice for young girls on how to maintain thier anorexia, hide it from parents, etc.. It's really very scary and sad.

The celebs' reported measurments are alarming--the women who are closest to my height weigh 20 lbs less than I do. . .and two summers ago, when I'd lost 7 lbs because of break up related depression, my mom and a lot of my friends freaked out because I looked scary.

I know I'm a bit overweight, but the girl who's about my height weighs *eighty* pounds less than I do. She's 20-30 pounds less than the so-called "ideal" weight (which I haven't weighed since 7th grade and don't think is a realistic weight goal for someone with my frame).

Shoot! It reminds me of that scripture...they will call good evil and evil good.

Some of the pro-ana sentiments, celebrating a woman's choice to make starvation a "goal" and following through on it, it's so unbelievably twisted.

You take a true virtue, and twist it to satisfy an unhealthy behavior. Satan's calling card.

Most people would say I'm thin, I'm a size 6. My BMI is around 24 or something. I cannot even imagine what 17.5 looks or feels like.

I'm 5'2" and weigh about 160 lbs. According to FitDay.com I'm in the "severe overweight" category. What's crazy is that I'm a size 10, a size that many women aspire to. Yeah, I feel a little overweight right now, but definitely not fat. My personal ideal weight is 145 lbs, which borders me on a size 8/10. That's when I look & feel my best. But even that weight is considered "moderate overweight". What has this crazy world come to, where a size 0 is considered perfection? I look at those pictures of women with their ribs sticking out and I just think it's sick. I would never want to look like that!

Stupid comment of the month: "Wintour once said she wouldn't hire a fat person, even if she was a brilliant editor."

Overlooking for a moment the stupidity of rejecting someone's expertise in favor of appearance, it might do these matchsticks some good to see someone who is truly overweight. Might give 'em some perspective. Too many of these underweight types actually believe that they need to lose weight.

Ye gods. I think I knew about this, but my own wl adventures lately made me really go through and read these sites. They're just heartbreaking -- these poor women.

I just went shopping and saw a number of XXS and 00 (that's double zero -- smaller than nothing) sizes.

Would you mind if I used your entry to rift a bit on this in my own blog?

Thanks for the pointer.

BTW, for any who are interested. I have a program that I wrote years ago, based on a formula to find your true maximum weight. It takes into account your gender and frame size. F'rinstance, I'm 6'1" with a medium build. According to the Air Force, my max is 211. According to this formula, though, it's 188. I felt a lot better at 188 than I do now.

I got the formula years ago from a guy who did a fireside about nutrition and the WoW. I learned a lot that evening.
