Panic At the Gym

I weighed myself at the gym this morning, like I do at the beginning of every week. I gasped. Despite only working out twice last week and completely going off the no sugar thing for the entirety of Graduation Extravaganza, I did NOT gain that much weight in one week!

I then proceeded to swim the most breathless and inefficient 80 laps of my life as I tried not to panic. While I swam, I thought, "If one week is going to throw me off that much, I might as well just forget it and let myself balloon up. At least then I'd get to eat dark chocolate regularly. What's the point, if my body is so dead set against this whole weight loss thing?"

Then reason stepped in for a second and said, "Maybe the scale is broken." I didn't really believe it though.

After I finished, I went back into the locker room and stood next to the scale as I attempted to zero it out. Sure enough, 8.5 pounds off. On my way out, I mentioned to the woman at the front desk that the scale was off. She said, "Oh yeah, the guy hasn't fixed it yet." Ooookay. I said, "You might want to put a sign up so people don't freak out when they weigh themselves." (Seeing as how I've seen more than a few obsessive compulsive exercisers at my local Bally's). She looked thoughtful for a second. "Yeah, that's a good idea." That hadn't occurred to anyone who works at Bally's apparently.

Even though the scale was off, I still gained back that 1.5 pounds I lost last week. Enough of this! I'm tired of the piddly back and forth and am rededicating myself to no sugar and the gym at least 4 times a week. I didn't make it there yesterday, but I did walk to the grocery store about 1.25 miles away, and walked back with 50 pounds of milk and canned goods and baby carrots on my back so that counts for something. I'm also doing a caffeine de-tox. However, I didn't have any caffeine yesterday and I feel fine, so I don't think my one Diet Coke with Lime per day really made me an addict after all.

GW is blabbering on about something and preempting Ellen. Not happy about that.

Graduation Extravaganza, Part Deux

My family and the fact that I've eaten more sugar in the last 4 days than I have in the last 4 months has worn me out. I stayed up late with the fam every night and then woke up early again to meet up with them back at their hotel.

Friday was graduation day and it was fun, but surreal. Seriously, it's been 3 years? I know many many MANY things have changed in that time, but I still can't believe it's all over. I sat next to a guy from my 1L section and we had fun commenting on everything. I learned just before the ceremony that there was some scandal concerning the dean's unilateral pick of a very conservative senator as our speaker. Interesting, since we're probably second only to UC Berkeley as far as liberal law schools go. But our dean is conservative. And a lot of people don't like him. Apparently there's usually a faculty committee that selects the speaker and to protest some of the faculty did not wear their robes to graduation. Oh the scandal!

Everything went smoothly despite that little issue. I was hooded by the Dean of Students, who I love, so that was nice. There were 3 people hooding us on stage and she just happened to free up as I walked on. That night, we went to a great seafood place in Essex for dinner. I had been there before, but it seems they've changed their bread recipe to new and improved Crack Bread. It looked like normal French bread, but it was infused with something addictive. We kept flagging down the waitress for more bread, and step on it.

Saturday morning I drove my parents to the airport, while my grandpa, aunt, and cousin did a little sightseeing downtown. The plan was to drive out to Lexington and Concord that afternoon, but my grandpa got lost driving back to the hotel. They called me at one point and said, "We're in Harvard Square," which really means, "We're going to get really lost now and you might never see us again" because that's how it is when you drive in Harvard Square.

Eventually they made it back to the hotel (and I managed to read almost the whole June issue of O magazine in the meantime). We then dashed out to Lexington where we hopped out of the car, looked at the Minuteman statue for a moment a la the Griswold family at the Grand Canyon, and headed back to Cambridge. A couple of my friends married each other Saturday and I wanted to make it back for their reception. I felt bad that we didn't get to Concord, but considering they made it to Old North Church, the USS Constitution, Harvard Square, and Lexington all in one day, I think they did pretty well.

Sunday morning I dropped them off at the train station. They're going to New York for a couple of days and then to DC, then flying back to Tucson. My grandpa, who was 17, I think, when he joined the Army during WWII, hasn't seen the WWII Memorial yet, so that's at the top of their list in DC.

I must look pretty relaxed because I had two people at church tell me I looked cute. Apparently I need to roll out of bed, slide on a skirt and sweater, and pull my hair back in a ponytail more often. I think it's probably more that everything is over for the moment and I have a whole week of nothing (although my social calendar is filling up, but that's fun). And, oh yeah, I need to consolidate my loans. I'm not looking forward to having how much I owe spelled out in black and white.

Lastly, more pictures.

Graduation Extravaganza, Part One

Auspicious Beginning: My parents’ plane on Wednesday night was 4 hours (4 HOURS!) late. That got them into Logan at 1:30. No problem since I am now officially nocturnal. It was really only a short little jump for me seeing as how this semester I turned in what wound up being an A paper at 2:19 in the morning. I do such good work late at night. (see also: Tuesday’s late night ramblings that were referenced on Times & Seasons. Not only am I smarter in the middle of the night, but apparently I’m quite a hoot).

Thursday: Cheesecake Factory for lunch. My mom and I skipped over to Macy’s (Macy’s makes me happy! Lord & Taylor makes me sad) while we were waiting for the beeper to vibrate. I wanted to pick up a new perfume I tried the other day. There was a sample of CK One Summer in my latest Marie Claire and since it smelled all citrusy, which usually works well for me, I thought I’d try it out. See, I have a very hard time finding perfume I like, for some reason. I might like it in the bottle or on someone else or even on me for the first 20 minutes or so. But then my chemistry reacts with the fragrance molecules, turning the perfume on my skin into some raging overwhelming odor that gives me a headache. I can’t wear anything with ylang-ylang in it. Do you know how many perfumes have undertones of ylang-ylang? A lot.

Anyway, the CK One Summer did not give me a headache. Always a good sign. I tried some on for my mom and she told me to get it. I did and got 20% off by opening a Macy’s charge account. Which means I can now save more on Macy’s sale items. This could prove to be dangerous.

Cheesecake Factory was yummy, as usual. I got my new favorite dessert, the Factory Mud Pie, which is just obscene, really. Big slab of chocolate cake, one scoop of vanilla and one scoop of coffee ice cream, and about 2 cans of whipped cream sprinkled with chocolate chips and slivered almonds. Yeah. I ate the ice cream, scooped 3/4 of the whipped cream onto my bread plate, and brought the cake home. The no sugar plan is on hiatus this weekend because of graduation.

What? Don’t judge. It’s my food plan, I can make my own rules.

Then we went to see Revenge of the Sith because my parents hadn’t seen it yet. We were supposed to go on a Duck Tour, but (have I mentioned?) Boston weather sucks. ROTS observation of the day: I just don’t buy Padme dying. It doesn’t sit well with me because of the Return of the Jedi continuity problem, but I also don’t buy it because of who Padme is. If you’ll remember, in the first two movies Padme was stubborn and kicked some serious butt and took care of herself. You could kind of see where Leia got it. Now she suddenly has no reason to go on because of Anakin’s betrayal and psychotic downward spiral (and really, she didn’t see that coming?)? As if! She has two babies to take care of and an Empire to fight against. I think George screwed up royally with that one.

My grandpa, aunt, and cousin came into town tonight. Their flight was only delayed a half hour. My grandpa, aunt, and I sat in the hotel lounge for a few hours talking. I haven’t seen them since my Nana passed away a little more than 3 years ago. So many things have changed…

Last time they saw me I was 37.5 pounds heavier, in an unhealthy relationship, insecure, and cared way too much about what other people thought about me. Of course, my aunt asked about my ex. I was surprised she asked, but upon reflection, she must have been thinking of how to bring it up for a bit. The last time she saw me I was in love with him and we were planning on getting married, so of course she’s curious since probably all she ever heard was that we broke up, with none of the gory details.

Talking about him tonight he seemed further away than he ever has. Far away and very small. Not insignificant, because that relationship and the events that followed have made me stronger now. But small compared to who I am now and what I feel like I would really want in a husband. I didn’t get into any of the cruddy specifics of who did what to whom, and how heartless he was. It wasn’t necessary. I just said that he wasn’t good for me, the relationship wasn’t good for me, and I’m so different that if I met him now, I don’t think he would interest me. Maybe as a friend…maybe.

Tomorrow (or later today – someday I will get to bed before midnight again), is the graduation itself. Stay tuned for pictures.

Can't. Turn. Off. My. Brain.

It's 2 AM. I just got out of bed after laying there for 2 hours trying to fall asleep. I'm tired. I'm yawning. I swam 80 laps this morning, which usually knocks me out around 11 PM. ( I also lost another 1.5 pounds this week. Happy dance!) But I'm thinking thinking thinking. What am I thinking about?

Moving to DC
Job
Money
Revenge of the Sith and the shell of Anakin at the end
Family coming to town and wondering how to entertain them in the middle of a Noreaster

Update: 3:11 AM. Guess who is wide awake and catching up on her blog reading while downloading songs from iTunes? Listening to: AM Radio by Everclear

Downloaded:
Feel Good Inc. - Gorillaz; Hate To Say I Told You So - The Hives; Remedy - Jason Mraz; Love In A Trashcan - The Raveonettes; Seven Nation Army - The White Stripes; New Slang - The Shins; Evil - Interpol

Now playing: Toxic by Britney Spears (Shut up. I'm charmingly eclectic)

I rented 2 movies from Blockbuster today and am thinking I should just pop one in. Something tells me I won't be swimming at 8 AM tomorrow - um, I mean later today.

I just read someone's blog saying Revenge of the Sith was the best movie they'd ever seen EVER. Ummm....yeahhh.... Don't get out much? I liked it, obviously, but come on.

Should I be concerned that the house is making weird noises while being buffetted by 40-50 mph winds? Like barrels rolling around on the roof.

3:46 AM: The Boxer - Carbon Leaf (aka My New Favorite Band in the World)

5:08 AM: Still feeling pretty darn awake. Maybe I can take a nap this afternoon. Then my transition to totally nocturnal will be complete.

Oh crap, birds are chirping outside.

Sith Happens

Since all the other bloggers are being so punny with their subject lines, I thought I'd follow suit, like the lemming I am.

I just got back from seeing Revenge of the Sith and I have one word. Awesome. Maybe it helps to have excruciatingly low expectations, but after I left Episodes I and II, I just thought, "Eh. Too bad they weren't very good. So disappointed in George Lucas. Etc, etc." This one I just thought, "Oh my gosh, I actually liked it!"

And I did, I really really did. The battles and light saber duels were amazing. The love story, not quite as painful to watch as in Attack of the Clones.

I knew this movie was going to be sad, but it was just tragic to see it all come down. Greek tragedy tragic. Oedipus stabbing out his eyes tragic. With a bit of O'Henry thrown in for good measure.

My faith in George Lucas is sort of restored.

Hayden Christensen is just hot, too. Not only did I appreciate the scruffiness (yum!), but he spent more time in this movie glowering than whining, like in the last movie. I can get behind the glowering more; at least he doesn't seem so wussy. Evil, yes. Wussy, no.

The whole time I just thought how sad it is to know what he comes to and how. I wasn't expecting his motivations to be what they were though. It put an interesting spin on things.

However, BIG FREAKING PLOT HOLE!
Did anyone else notice this? I vaguely remember one person alluding to it. Chris, was it you?

***SPOILER*** Do not read any further if you haven't seen the movie and don't want the plot hole revealed, especially if your daughter has challenged you to find it. Dad, this means you.

Um, Padme dies? Does ANYone remember the conversation Luke and Leia have in Return of the Jedi where he asks her what she remembers about her REAL mother? She says she was very beautiful, but sad. I really don't think the newborn infant Leia would be taking all that in. She would have to have been 2 or 3 at least when Padme dies. How is George going to explain that one?

Also, Bail Organa's comment about his wife and he taking Leia because they'd been thinking about adopting a baby girl anyway seemed WAY forced. I know that George has adopted kids and adoption is wonderful, but huh? It would have been much more natural for him to say "my wife and I will take her," period. End of discussion. He could have even put some little comment in about the respect he had for Padme and how he would like to take care of Leia and raise her with stories of her wise mother (although she wasn't wise enough to spot pure evil when she saw it and married it and created little Force-filled babies with it, even after he had his first psychotic episode and killed all the Sand People).

Of course to solve the whole plot hole issue, Padme and Leia could have just gone to Alderaan to hide from Darth Vader and then we could have just assumed Padme dies a few years later. Wastes away, lovelorn, or something like that. THAT would have worked, George.

And now everyone knows what a giant Star Wars geek I am. Whatever. I wear my honey buns with pride.

2 Levels of Sadness

Last week my grandma called me from Florida to let me know that she and her husband Dave had not in fact left that morning in their Suburban, Boston or bust, with stops in Tennessee and Alabama. Dave was having chest pains and his doctor didn't want him to travel. They were supposed to do some tests today to figure out if he would need surgery or not and if he didn't, then my grandma would fly up for my graduation. Well we just heard and he needs to have triple bypass. Yuck. My grandma had that about 15 years ago, so at least she knows what to expect. It's too bad because he's recently lost a lot of weight, but I guess 60-some years of being a good ole boy from Alabama, with the requisite portions of Crisco in your daily diet, plus smoking, clogs those arteries right up.

Here are where the 2 levels of sadness come in. I'm sad for Dave because he's been dealing with back problems for some time and has been doing progressively better, what with the weight loss and everything. This is going to knock him off his feet again. Then I'm also sad for me because Mamaw can't be at my graduation. :(

However, with this stinkin' Noreaster, maybe we should just cancel graduation altogether. I can see my breath! Today, May 24th! That's just wrong.

A Little Disturbed

According to my referrals I am the number one hit in an altavista search for "M-o-r-m-o-n g-i-r-l" p-o-r-n (the dashes are so that the connection doesn't get made in too many more search engines [I'm hoping])

So for any of you who happened to make it here via that particular search, I say, for shame.

Sparkling Fresh!

I heart cleanliness.

Today I finished with my cleaning. The ENTIRE apartment has been dusted, swept, Swiffered, mopped, and disinfected. Hurrah! (Of course when I came into the kitchen after one of my roommates cooked dinner there were crumbs and other food detritus on the counter - and she had already "cleaned up." Breathe, Kelly, just breathe)

I always feel so content when I know my surroundings are clean and that I worked hard to make them that way. You'd think I wouldn't let my room become the pit of despair that it's been for the past month or so since I really do like things to be tidy, but, really now, that's what makes me interesting. I'm an enigma.

I also shredded the big pile of stuff I needed to shred and am mailing off about 4 packages tomorrow that I've been putting off mailing for ages.

Tomorrow morning I'm going to the gym again. I didn't feel too bad about not going today since apparently I was burning 200 calories an hour cleaning house, and overall it probably took me 3 or 4 hours. Then it's off to a sushi lunch with 2 friends from school before we become trolls while we study for the Bar.

Can I just say I am so over Boston weather? It is 45 degrees outside, and I think today's high might have reached 50, but I'm not sure. The weather channel is calling for rain right through the weekend and COLD temperatures. Give me a freaking break!!! As much as it drags me down I wouldn't care quite so much if my family wasn't coming into town this weekend and my parents and I weren't going on a Duck Tour and my graduation wasn't happening outside. Come on, weather gods. A little help?

On the upside, I got 10 out of 10 on the MSN state capitals quiz. So I've got that going for me. Thank you to my 2nd grade teacher, Ms. Raley.

Me - A Name I Call Myself

Last night the choir I'm in sang at Stake Conference. My voice still isn't up to par due to my phlegmy cold and we had a two hour practice beforehand that just basically did my vocal cords in so that there was no way I could hit the A below high C, which was the highest note last night. So I just mouthed the words when we hit the A.

Here's the thing that I wonder a lot lately. I'm only here for a few more months anyway, but I've been feeling very unecessary to the choir effort, other than filling a seat and adding bulk to the group. I love to sing, but I am fully aware that I have an adequate voice, nothing special. I sing with the first sopranos because 1) usually I can hit the notes unless my vocal chords are thrashed from a cold or excessive practicing, 2) we have 500 million altos, and 3) since I've been a first soprano my whole life my vocal sightreading skills are worthless, thus making me an ineffective second soprano.

There are some amazing first sopranos in this choir who can always hit the A, and even the high C's on the one song we've sung with high C's. They've all had vocal training and know how to project and get the absolute most from their voices. Frankly, when singing surrounded by these incredible singers, I often can't hear myself to be sure I'm hitting the notes unless I plug one of my ears because their voices are so powerful.

So I find myself wondering why I'm there and whether that hour after church every Sunday could be used more effectively for, oh, I don't know, napping? Hanging out with friends who aren't in the choir? Actually eating lunch somewhere around noontime?

Additionally, we keep performing the same songs over and over and I am getting really tired of them. I find that my emoting becomes less genuine when I don't really care about the song.

Just mulling this over tonight...

Hello, My Name is Kelly (Hi, Kelly)

I'm thinking about starting Book Readers Anonymous (BRA...hahahahahahhaha).

Sorry.

Anyway, it will be a special group for those of us with NO will power in a bookstore.

Today I went to a reading by Wendy McClure. Of course, I had to buy her book and get it signed. I link to her blog and when she mentioned she would be in Boston I looked it up and discovered she was going to be at the Borders near where I was having lunch with a former co-worker today. How convenient.

While at Borders I decided to go ahead and buy the book for my book club next month. And, oh yeah, the next book in the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series, which I haven't been able to find the last couple of times I looked. Apparently Book 3 is very popular. I can't decide if this is because Books 1 & 2 are so good that everyone rushes right out and gets Book 3, but then Book 3 isn't that great so no one gets Book 4, or if people just lose momentum after Book 3 and feel like they've had just about enough of Mma. Ramotswe.

By that point I was lost in the maze of bookshelves and remembered that there was a book by Louise Erdrich that someone had recommended to me. As I was moseying over to that section I noticed a pretty book with the word "Quilt" in the title and discovered it was part of a series of books about women, quilting women, who share their stories with each other, weaving intricate patterns of words similar to those stitched in their beautiful quilts. Or something like that. Sounds right up my alley in my sentimental moments. Let's go find the first book in the series, shall we?

All of these, in addition to the 2 books I've borrowed from my friend Sylvia should keep me busy for some time. I'm hoping to have most of them read before Bar prep starts.

I recognize that I have a real, tangible problem. I already have 3 bookshelves and the top shelf of the hutch on my desk full of books. Granted, one of my bookshelves has a couple of shelves devoted to videos and DVD's, but I still have an obscene number of books in my life. I'm supposed to be minimizing!

However, my dream is to have one of those old-fashioned libraries with walls and walls of books. So compared to that possible future, my book collection at this point is quite small. Piddly, even.

I'd Just As Soon Kiss A Wookiee

I really need to work on getting some people together to see Star Wars III because even though I know in my soul it's going to be awful, it's still STAR WARS.

My parents tell a story about us going to see The Empire Strikes Back and them not being able to get tickets. I was almost 4 at the time. My dad tried to placate me by saying we'd go see Bambi, or whatever the latest Disney movie was in the theaters at the time, but I would have none of it. I slid down the wall and sat there, quietly weeping at not being able to see The Empire Strikes Back. Yes, it's true. I have been a geek since the very beginning.

Growing up, I was Princess Leia (well, her and Wonder Woman). I know much has been made of the feminist dynamic of Princess Leia, but seriously, what an excellent role model for us little girls of the late 70s and early 80s. She was sarcastic and strong and didn't take crap from anyone. When no one else was getting the job done, she grabbed the gun and cleared the way for escape. She basically led the rebel alliance. Kick A**!

And really when it comes down to it, she wound up with Han Solo, who is Hotty McHotHot personified. It is very alluring that despite his brutish ways he was totally turned on by a strong woman like Leia.

I have a couple of questions for you all to celebrate the Star Wars extravaganza that is upon us:
1) Which movie is your favorite?
Mine: The Empire Strikes Back

2) What character did you play on the playground jungle gym, aka the rebel base and/or Death Star?
Mine: Duh (see above). Patty Shephard and I switched back and forth. The hotty of 1st grade always played Han Solo and any opportunity for a connection to him PLUS getting to play Princess Leia was just awesome.

Sidenote: did it ever bug anyone else that while all the other characters pronounced Han like "Hahn," Lando Calrissian pronounced it like "Ham" with an N? Billy Dee Williams, figure it out!

Sidenote 2: Super excited about the dark chocolate M&M's that are part of the latest Star Wars marketing machine. I bought a bag at Target last weekend and squirrelled them away for my next splurge day.

Update: It's midnight and I just got home from an Attack of the Clones watching party. I think I've been remembering it worse than it was. Don't get me wrong, the romantic dialogue is dismal, but the effects are cool and the story is compelling because, after all, you know what's going to happen. I especially like the seismic blast things that Jango Fett shoots out at Obi-Wan in the asteroid field. Now I really really really wish I was going to see the next movie tonight.

THIS is why I need a boyfriend. So someone could have reminded me amidst all my craziness that we really needed to get tickets to a midnight showing of Episode III.

Speaking of boys, I wish the cute guy with the amazing blue eyes who makes eye contact and exchanges cute smiles with me, but whose name I don't know, would ask me out. My friend Chrissy thinks maybe he's shy and he doesn't know my name either. I think he might be a Mormon playa and only date the skinny blondes. Whatever, I think I need a NCMO before I head off to DC.

Searching

According to the referral pages in my site meter my blog is No. 10 in a Yahoo search for "guys just don't get it." I take exception to that because what I actually said was "I just don't get it" and proceeded to talk about guys. Completely different.

AMAZING!

Remember that health law paper that was hanging over me for more than a year? The one that I delayed turning in because as I struggled with depression last Spring, it was the one final project I could postpone and the professor who I implicitly knew would understand? Remember how much I loathed that paper by the end?

Guess what?

I got an A!!!!!!!!

Which means I got an A in the class. Which means that I got 2 A's last Spring. 2 A's. The other one was in Tax (which proves what a complete and utter freakshow I am. Attorneys I know look a little disturbed when I tell them I got an A in Tax).

I feel like doing a little jig.

B&K 4EVER

I just saw Britney & Kevin in their first interview together on Ellen. Is it just me or is Kevin Federline the skeeviest guy in the world? {shudder}

Victory Over the Cold!

I'm still a little sniffly and I cough like once an hour BUT I made it to the pool today! Good thing too because after 2 weeks of minimal workouts and sitting on my butt recuperating, I gained a half a pound. Eek! I also only managed to do 64 laps and my set of 32 was achingly slow (15 minutes). But at least I did it.

I also just invented the best smoothie ever. Want the recipe? OK.

7 small strawberries (I used frozen)
1/3 C. blueberries (frozen again)
1 small banana
1/2 C. orange juice
1/2 T. sliced almonds
3 crushed ice cubes

Bear in mind, I didn't exactly measure any of this except for the OJ. So use your best judgment. It's fabulous, if I do say so myself.

On the agenda today is going through my Christmas ornaments and sifting out the ones that my 10 year-old self loved, but which I don't care for very much. My camera is opening up amazing new worlds of ebay sales to me. I figure I'll get everything I want to sell organized into one box and take pictures and then sell them in the Fall when people are looking for decorations.

I was going to pay bills and finish cleaning my room today, but I decided going through ornaments would be more fun. And frankly, this has been on my to do list for about 3 years, whereas the cleaning the room thing is a recent addition to the list.

The Cold May Be Waning

I actually had a semi-productive day. I got up and ate a Luna bar and went to the laundromat. Weird thing, though. The laundromat I usually go to was all dark and as I walked up I saw that ALL the fixtures were gone and the inside was a mess of bare pipes and concrete. Stuck on the front door was a piece of notebook paper with "CLOSED" scrawled on it. Very odd since that laundromat was always hopping whenever I was there. I went to my standby laundromat and discovered that during the day, the wash is 25 cents cheaper than the other laundromat. Fabulous!

Then I came home and gathered up all my law books from the last 3 years and trekked to school for book buyback. Moral of the story: I should have been selling books back all along because maybe they would have been more current and they would have actually bought back more of them. I wound up donating a lot of them, but walked away with $150. That's great and all, but kind of a rip off when you consider that each book originally cost me $80-$100. But now I have shelf space for the mounds of BarBri books that will be coming.

Then I stopped at Trader Joe's and picked up some easy-prepare meals since I'm obviously not motivated enough to cook when I'm not feeling well, but I realize I need to be eating decently and not subsisting on popcorn, raisins, and Luna bars.

Then I came home and collapsed on the couch as my head did this weird swirly thing, which I figure is my body's way of telling me, "We're not ready for this much activity!" Sigh.

However, after sitting on the couch and crocheting and watching movies for 6 hours, I did manage to tidy up my room some. It's still not clean, but at least there's not an obstacle course from the door to my bed anymore.

Tomorrow is a full day. I have to run to school and try to fax my resume for a job in DC, then go to the store to buy a wedding shower gift. THEN I'm getting my hair done. I am so excited! I've had kind of auburn hair for about a year now and I'm ready for a change. I'm going back to my natural color and getting highlights. Oo la la. The auburn has been the result of the lucky doscovery of the perfect shade of Feria. Tomorrow will be the first time I've gotten my hair colored at a salon since I was in college.

After the hair extravaganza, I will be going to the aforementioned wedding shower and then to a surprise birthday party. I'm sure I will come home and collapse after all of that, but I'm looking forward to everything.

Did you ever have a semi-scandalous dream about a friend and then wake up and be like, "Whoa!!"? I'm totally blaming it on the cold.

Frustration and Cabin Fever

First of all, I'm still sick. I've been sick since Sunday afternoon. I woke up today thinking I was feeling a little better and then the sinus headache kicked in. Pain like a vice around half my head and neck. I wound up taking a 4 hour nap this afternoon, falling asleep with an ice pack on my forehead and knocked out by cold medicine. Good news; I woke up sans headache.

Second, because I am still sick, I haven't worked out once this week. Just walking up the stairs to my apartment makes me breathless so I know there will be no lap swimming going on.

Third, also because I am sick, I have not been able to get 1/10 of what I wanted to get done this week done. I had plans. I did manage to get my Bar application mailed in so that's one thing I did. But I wanted to swim every single day. I wanted to clean my pit of a room. I wanted to clean my entire apartment until it sparkled. I wanted to eat really well. I wanted to do my laundry. I wanted to be social and see some people who I've been missing. I wanted to go through all my paperwork and shred stuff I can shred and file stuff that needs to get filed. I wanted to follow up on some of my job networking contacts.

Instead, I've been a big giant bum, slogging around my apartment. Yesterday I did go lay in the sun in the park, which was fabulous. Today I did manage to go through all my mail from the past couple of weeks, throw some stuff away, and arrange the rest into little piles to be taken care of at some later time. Then I laid down on the couch and watched a movie because organizing those piles had just worn me out so.

I think I'm just really annoyed because for the past 3 months I've been planning what I would get done during these 3 weeks before studying for the Bar begins. So far I've wasted almost a whole week being sick and I'm just annoyed about it.

I also ate a few cookies today. :( My splurge day was Monday because I finished my paper. I had a half pint of Ben & Jerry's (Dublin Mudslide = Heaven), one mini peanut butter cup, one mini peppermint patty, and probably six cookies made by a girl at church, which cookies have become the stuff of legend in my ward. Well, my roommate had some people over tonight and a couple of them brought MORE cookies into the house, which my roommates told me were even better than the legendary cookies. So of course I tried one. Then I had 3 more.

So not only am I not working out, but I'm allowing myself to eat crap. And when I'm not eating crap I'm not eating very well because being sick has made me uninterested in fixing and then eating anything very healthy or substantive. Today I had a fruit smoothie and Kashi waffle for breakfast, PB&J for lunch, and then grazed on some crackers and fruit that my roommate put out for the guests as my dinner. And then the cookies. I thawed chicken. I have lettuce in the fridge to make salad. But I'm not interested or motivated enough to do anything with it.

And because I'm not working out, I'm finding my head going to that bad freaked-out-because-I-don't-have-a-job-yet place. When I work out regularly I'm much better about putting things in perspective (or being in denial, whichever you prefer). Seriously, I've had a lot of confidence lately that I will find a job and all I need to worry about right now is studying for the Bar and making sure I budget my money well for the summer. Over the past couple of days I've felt that panicky craziness creeping back into my head periodically. I can feel it lurking in the back of my mind, just waiting to pounce. I need to get to the pool. I need my body to heal itself already.

Pictures - Just Because I Have A New Camera and I Can

The people in the house on the corner obviously did some planning last Autumn during bulb-planting time.

And for those of you who remember what my street looked like during the Blizzard of 2005, here is what it looks like once the green comes back to town:

Let the Sunshine In

Seeing as how it's a beautiful day today and the temperature will be rocketing up to 74 degrees, and seeing as how The Weather Channel predicts 61 degrees and poopy weather for the next week, I am foregoing movies and the couch for trashy magazines and the park today. Let's here it for UV!

Good news: I have a place to live in DC. My friend who I've stayed with when I visit and her roommate are getting kicked out of their place because their landlord is selling it. They went apartment hunting last week and found a great place at a great price. It's 3 bedrooms so they kindly invited me to be the third roommate. I get my own bedroom and bathroom on the 1st floor, which has been dubbed "the suite." Sheer decadence!

I also found out a couple of days ago that I will be living basically across the street from my friend Allen, which means we can continue our torrid affair unfettered by distance. That's a relief. ;)

Stupid White Blood Cells - Sooo Not Doing Their Job

{Cough}

Well, I must have had a tough semester or something because I'm sick. This always happens after crazy semesters. I will myself healthy through the entire 4 months and then when I let down my guard at the end of it all, I get sick.

{Sniffle}

Today I had to go downtown to pick up a letter of recommendation for the Bar, then go to the store. Tomorrow I would like to go swimming in the morning, mail in my Bar application, do laundry, and clean. I think what I will probably do is mail in my Bar application, lay on the couch and watch movies, and let my body fix itself.

I hate being sick. It doesn't happen very often and I get cabin fever after about half a day. I mean, it's not like I wouldn't spend hours watching VH1 and TLC shows if I was well, but I'd be popping up every commercial break and doing something useful and probably organizing bills and my student loan statements while watching TV. Being sick makes me just want to lie down and be still, which my crazy racing brain does not like at all.

{Cough}

Just Turned In My Last Paper

I'm done with law school.

Whoa.

Newsflash: I Got the Camera!

I bet you never thought I would get it, huh? But I determined that I would be a much happier person overall with a digital camera in my life. Since 6 PM yesterday when I came home and saw the box on my bedroom floor, that has turned out to be true.

I took it to the party last night, and I also took random pictures of myself just because I wanted to take pictures and everyone else was asleep and I really don't want my messy bedroom recorded for posterity.

So without further ado...

Artist with camera in mirror.

First attempt of self portrait with camera held out at arm's length.

About to burst out laughing at myself.

And I call this one "Come Hither."

Hee hee.

Feeling Tapped Out

Because...
A) My downstairs neighbor had another of his crazy parties last night, which meant I slept on the couch in the living room far, far away from my cozy bed that happens to reside above his slammin' bass and I'm always waking up all through the night when I sleep on the couch.

B) I am writing a paper, which is the very last thing I have to do for law school ever. Ask me how much I don't want to write this paper? It's really hard to get motivated to write this last paper when it's only worth one credit of my grade. I have to turn it in, of course, but part of me just wants to write an exposition about how I'm graduating and, Professor, I'm going to save you and I a lot of hassle by requesting that you just give me a B. That's cool.

I wrote 10 pages today. It needs to be 15. I recognize that some of what I've written is utter garbage. It's 1 credit. I'm not too concerned. I still have some stuff to say, but I'm so tired and unmotivated. I was thinking about not going to my friends' party tonight at 8, but I've just made the executive decision that I'm going because it's not like anything other than blather is going to be coming out of me at this point today.

However, I might have a place to live in DC. How lovely to possibly have that taken care of.

Don't Judge Me During Finals Time

I just finished watching an Oprah about compulsive hoarders. Several months ago I saw a show about this woman whose house was DISGUSTING! Stuff EVERYwhere, including dog poop because she lets her dogs go wherever. So it's a real problem, and like alcoholism and eating disorders it's a control issue.

That's fine and I can watch it and go oh my goodness, how can people live like this? But today they went back to Carol's house and even though her living room and dining room were clean, when they went into her bedroom, there were piles and papers all over the floor. My gosh! Piles and papers ALL OVER THE FLOOR! Say it isn't so!

Um, no one look in my bedroom, k?

I'm chalking my piles and papers up to throwing all the mail on my floor (except for bills with deadlines) as I stumble in after a day of studying. This has been going on for the past 2 weeks.

However, prior to finals starting, I started minimizing, which is lots of fun. I may become a compulsive minimizer. I'm getting rid of my old Victoria magazines and have already gotten rid of 3 full garbage bags of clothes.

I've also been looking forward for the past month to cleaning my ENTIRE apartment after finals are done. This is basically because I was raised by Mary Lynn M and despite the smell of bleach that may linger in the kitchen or the bathroom after one of my roommates takes the notion to clean, I look around and know it's not REALLY clean. It's a sickness, really, the ability to smell and see the filth that lingers.

However, I also have a healthy sprinkling of Keith M in me, which keeps me from curling up into a fetal position when things are dirty and instead, put it into another part of my brain and ignore it until I have time to handle it.

Dolly Parton

Emily has noted that she had "Money For Nothing" running through her head last night.

I'll counter that with"9 to 5," which has supplanted any knowledge I might have once had of the Rules of Professional Responsibility. Pity, since that final is in 51 minutes.

Workin' 9 to 5, what a way to make a livin'
Barely gettin' by, it's all takin' and no givin'
They just use your mind and they never give you credit
It's enough to drive you crazy if you let it

Ooooh yeeeah.

Happy Cinco de Mayo!

For those of you who drink, have a margarita for me. (I sometimes miss rum & cokes and margaritas from my heathen days).

In the spirit of the occasion, here are some mariachis!

These particular mariachis were waiting for us outside the church at Santa Cruz Jenn's wedding. Jenn and Rawson led the procession through the streets of Santa Cruz to the reception hall.

It was a blast!

Santa Cruz Jenn and her husband Rawson leading the way. Isn't she beautiful? She's been my be frie for over 15 years!

The wedding party. Classy bridesmaid dresses, yes?

I've lost .5 pound this week. I'm looking at it as a victory since the last time I swam was Saturday and I've been sitting on my butt in the BSA office for the past 4 days straight studying for Crim Law & T&E. And not eating very many fruits or veggies. I am back on the wagon, though, and need to go to the grocery store.

Also my waist is now well below the "risk of heart disease" measurement of 35 inches.

88 laps today (32 in 14:20 - I'm getting faster!)

Professional Responsibility exam tomorrow. To which I want to say, "Come on! I already passed the MPRE!" So right after Ellen I will begin studying. Ooo, yummy! Brendan Fraser is on. Must concentrate on cuteness.

Swimming

80 laps last Saturday (32 in a row, 14:30 - I'm gradually getting a wee bit faster. I like to imagine that by the time I lose all my extra poundage I will be like lightning streaking through the water). It annoys me that there's a water aerobics class at Bally's every Saturday morning from 8:30-9:30, which means I can't swim laps until they're done. Yes, I'm a pool snob that way. It's just that the pool is so very very small that every little thing affects everyone else who might happen to want to use the pool.

They do leave one lane blocked off for lap swimming and I actually tried to swim in that lane last week, but do you have any idea how much wake 10 water aerobicizers create? Trust me, it's a lot. More than I create when I swim butterfly. More than the super fast swimmer girl in the American flag swim cap who I see on the weekdays and envy and feel like I'm doing something right if I can keep up with her for half a lap. I probably got a better workout swimming against the wake since not only was I dragging my chubby self through the water, but I was fighting 10 high-kicking aerobicizers. But I'd rather have peace and calm so I can go to my little zen place.

I don't know if there are any other swimmers who read my blog, but I had a cool endorphin-rich experience Saturday. I can't really explain it, except to say that I felt like my body was in perfect swimming-synch, like a machine. I think that's what shaved the 10 seconds off of my time. I could just feel myself propelling through the water, everything in perfect balance.

That's what I mean by my zen place.

I know posting about my swimming from last Saturday might seem weird, but I want a record of my workouts. I haven't been at all this week, using my usual swimming time to study. I am planning on going tomorrow, though, because I feel sluggish and huge today. Might have something to do with being completely exhausted too - which can also be remedied by working out. It's the miracle cure!

Sigh of Relief

Hallelujah, it's over. (Amen!)

Just took my Trusts & Estates final. I really have no idea how I did, but I studied hard. All through the multiple choice and short answer I was like, "I'm totally getting this!" Then the essays. Essay 2 covered a topic she discussed for maybe 20 minutes on the 2nd day of class.

Yeah.

Sooo, we'll see what happens.

2 down, 1 to go (+ a paper)

FREAKING OUT

I CAN'T MEMORIZE A 28-PAGE TRUSTS & ESTATES OUTLINE BY 2 PM!!! IT'S JUST NOT POSSIBLE!!!

Book Meme

Oh yay, I'm part of a meme. I'm not exactly sure what that means, all I know is Chris requested that I complete the following and pass it on. So here goes:

You're stuck inside Fahrenheit 451. What book would you be?
Have you ever noticed how so many of the classics are really, really depressing?

I think maybe I'd be Paradise Regained by Milton. It was the only thing we read in my Milton class that didn't make me want to bang my head against a wall, and actually has a lot of very beautiful and hopeful passages. I think I'd need hope if I was living in the Fahrenheit 451 world.

Have you ever had a crush on a fictional character?
Of COURSE. There's Gibert Blythe and Mr. Darcy. Also Barney Snaith from another L.M. Montgomery book The Blue Castle . Actually, the letter that Captain Wentworth writes Anne at the end of Persuasion is pretty fabulous. I guess basically any male character who isn't afraid to show vulnerability to the woman he loves. Sigh...

Which fictional character do you like the most?
Cynthia Coppersmith from the Mitford books. She has overcome a lot, including a cheating ex-husband and depression, and when we meet her she is strong in faith and positive in her attitude toward life and what it throws at her. She is also doing exactly what she wants to be doing by being a children's book author.

The last book you bought is...
Gosh, I don't know. I've been borrowing from friends and the library lately...
Oh yes! I do know! (It took me a minute) The second book in the Traveling Pants series. If you're a girl/woman and haven't read these yet, I would highly recommend them. They're coming out with a movie this summer, but I'm a big fan of reading the books before I see the movie. Sometimes I'm disappointed by the movie then, but other times I can like them each individually for what each medium has to offer.

What are you currently reading?
Out to Canaan by Jan Karon
Law - lots and lots of law.

Five books you would take to a deserted island
Scriptures (which I realize labels me as a church geek, but first of all, they're huge. I could read them forever and not memorize them all. Second, I always get something different out of them when I read them. Whether or not you believe they're inspired by God, there is a lot of wisdom and words to live by in scripture)

If I can take serieses (what is the plural of series?): The Mitford series, Anne of Green Gables series, and Harry Potter series

However, if I have to stick with individual books, my other 4 would be:
A Tale of Two Cities - I read it once and wished I had the time to really delve into it. Reading it for class really puts the kibosh on leisurely enjoying the language and drama

The Country of the Pointed Firs by Sarah Orne Jewett - lovely book

Ack! I don't know! There are too many good books. The Enchanted April, The House of the Spirits, A Room With A View... The list goes on and on.

What books, if any, do you NOT want to read?
Most anything by Stephen King, although The Stand was interesting (However, reading that book in the middle of a Chicago winter was a bad idea. Every cough, sneeze, or sniffle from my fellow El riders signaled the Apocalypse). I read one other short story by him when I was 10 and TO THIS DAY I can't get the ickiness out of my head.

Romance novels in general

Anything by Herman Melville that I haven't already been forced to read during my foray into acadaemia.

Who are you going to pass this to?
Amy, because she's my cousin.
Emily, because she's a fellow U of A English geek. Duh.
Jerilyn, because she's an encouraging friend and I want to know what she has to say, but I also don't want her to feel pressured to answer this RIGHT NOW because I know she's really busy.

Today's Horoscope

What's happening in your community today that attracts crowds, Kelly? A parade? A festival of some kind? Some friends may want you to go there with them. You might think you're too busy, but an hour or two away from your chores certainly won't hurt. Take some time out - this is a time for having fun! If you want to, go! You could meet some interesting people.

The interesting people will just have to make do without me. Today is all about Trusts and Estates and freaking out about the closed-book final tomorrow. Anyone want to talk about inter vivos revocable trusts?

Note to astrocenter.com: I don't think I'm too busy, thank you very much. I am too busy. I don't need didacticism in my horoscope.

I Don't Think I'm Being Unreasonable

The other day I was driving home from school when a biker came peeling out of a side street right in front of my car. I slammed on the brakes and slowed down to about 10 mph. He was wearing fancy bike duds so I assumed this wasn't the first time he'd ridden with traffic, but you never know. The skin tight shirt and biker shorts may just be for show. He then proceeded to ride right down the middle of the one lane of traffic, going somewhere between 5 and 10 mph, while a long line of cars stacked up behind me. I waited for about 30 seconds, assuming he would move to the side of the street - you know, into the bike lane. He didn't, so I honked.

He whips his head around, apparently shocked that there are actual cars on the street, and BLOWS HIS WHISTLE AT ME.

Yes, he had a whistle around his neck. Is this common to bike riders? I don't think I've seen it before.

He moved to the side of the road (which is all I really wanted) and continued to blow at me. Then at the next stoplight, he sailed past me on the left side and looked in at me, screaming, "WHAT?!"

I wish he had an email address or a phone number on the back of his bike because I'd like to have a little chat with him about car/bike etiquette. Rule No. 1 is, my car is bigger, heavier, and faster than your bike. I don't want to hit you, but if you come swerving in front of me and stay there, I might, and believe me, you and your fancy bike will be much more mangled than me and my car.

Second, don't ride down the middle of the street and then look all surprised and infuriated when the people in the cars behind you get a wee bit annoyed at going 1/3 the speed limit.

Third, Dude, the bike shorts do nothing for you.
