If you have never watched Family Guy, there is no way in good conscience that I can recommend it to you. It's crude.
HOWEVER, it has its moments. Brilliant pop culture reference moments. Like when the Hawkmen from Flash Gordon showed up to help Stewie take down the Luftwaffe when Stewie and Brian traveled back in time. I was the only one in my house who got that one.
Another classic moment was the complete reenactment of "Shipoopi" from The Music Man.
Family Guy - Shipoopi
Again, only one in my house who got it. Either Jason was very sheltered or we watched a LOT of movies when I was growing up.
The fact that the show is based in Quahoag (read: Providence), Rhode Island endears it to me in the weirdest way, especially since half the people I come across in a day sound just like Peter and Lois.
I think that one of the best moments I've ever seen on TV happened this past week when the family visited Ground Zero in New York and the following exchange took place:
Awesome.

I love the Shipoopi reenactment. I think it demonstrates the true brilliance of the show: that they push gags to the point where you start to think "that's not funny anymore," and then keep pushing it until it becomes funny again.
Also, I love The Music Man. I still have it on a VHS tape I taped off of PBS at least 20 years ago, complete with pledge drive interruptions.
Ah! I think I finally understand how George W. Bush thinks!
Thanks for your help with that.
T-K
I think that explains things fairly accurately coming from W's mind I think. I'm watching people gather in Grant Park on T.V.- I used to be able to look out of my apartment windows and see Grant Park and wish I was there now. We moved there when that area wasn't too cool and had to leave.
I like the fact that you have this up Kelly - an American schlub who, like a big portion of a lot of Americans, isn't really sure who did what, when, or where but they saw what happened on T.V. and feel bad about it. Bad enough to want a change of the guard and I am watching the numbers come in right now and unless Deus Ex Machina happens again like with W. & Dole before (sic., Skull & Bones), then a Harvard grad will be our next President. Too Awesome.
I got my email since I was one of the first people to sign on to his campaign and was offered a ticket to Grant Park but didn't respond fast enough so got wait listed. Rats. Can you imagine the energy there tonight? Halleluia and it's jubilee.
I have a thing, kinda like with South Park, that whenever Rawson puts on Family Guy, I roll my eyes and go to bed. Then, when he's not around, I love it, love it, love it. Your post captures this tension.
Of course, this is counterbalanced by Rawson's major eye-rolling, snoring, and fast-forwarding when I make him watch The Music Man. Maybe he secretly loves that, too.
(on a related note, did you know Seth MacFarlane was supposed to be on one of the flights that morning from Boston, but missed it?)
Jordan, I think you need a Music Man DVD.
Mom and Dad, I think it's a pretty concise sum up of what happened.
Jenn, yeah, like Jason secretly loves Jane Austen movies. Seriously, if he refers to Colin Firth one more time as "Mr. Darby"...
