Ring A Ding Ding

I realize I'm probably opening up a can of worms here, but has anyone heard buzz, good or bad, on the LG Chocolate phone line? I am all aflutter about the Cherry Chocolate:

Oooo, pretty!

It plays music too, which is handy, especially since my iPod died a few months ago. I know, I need to take it to the Apple store, and my techy boyfriend tells me he thinks the hard drive is dead, which is apparently not that difficult to fix, but in the meantime having a phone that also plays music would make me happy. I would be like those people in the commercials moving my head from side to side to Nelly Furtado and Timbaland.

Plus, since I'm a Verizon customer already, I have money toward a new phone coming to me and if I order it online I get a discount, which makes the phone free. And I already have a Bluetooth headset that I got for super cheap at a Black Friday sale (and which doesn't work with my current antiquated phone). I just need to buy the music pack for $30 and maybe a car charger since that's always handy to have and I'm all set with my sassy new phone.

Of course what I would really like is to be rich and be able to buy the iPhone, but I'll just have to admire from afar until they get down to a reasonable price.

As a bonus question, does anyone have a good site for downloading music? Preferably legal. iTunes is expensive and puts too many restrictions on the songs - ie each song can only be copied something like 6 times. I have a great site, but because of legal machinations it will probably be shutting down within the next few months. Any suggestions?

emusic.com is legal and lets you download a regular mp3 without restrictions. Their catalog, however, is limited. I've thought of many a song I wanted that they didn't have. BUT--you can get a free trial, search for all the songs you want (unlimited downloads), and cancel if it doesn't suit your tastes.

I just renewed my own Verizon contract last month and was trying to decide on a Chocolate as well. I googled "LG Chocolate review" and looked on sites like CNet to see their opinion, and the general concensus of the reviews I read was that it's cool, but not worth the hype. One person suggested that the controls that look like a click wheel but that are really just a down button can be really really cumbersome when you have thousands of songs to scroll through.

My ipod is still working, so I wasn't taking music playing into account when I got my phone--I was looking more for the digital camera capability. But when it came down to it, I decided it was worth paying a little for a phone that had a better camera (the EnV has a 2 megapixel camera, and that's fairly good for a camera phone--and since I don't have a digital camera, it's been a nice little straight-to-web toy).

The EnV also has a music player, but I don't know how much it holds compared to the Chocolate. It might be worth it for a free Chocolate for doing what you want, especially compared to a Rzr, which is the other high-end free choice, right? At least, it was for me.

If you text message at all, the EnV is great for that because of the full keyboard inside. Other than the texting and the camera, though, I think it's about equal with the free phones. Well, it does have MobileWeb 2.0, which is very nice on the large interior screen--I was able to check my Hotmail while I was gone for break very easily.

Hey,

My sister has that phone and she really likes it. And i personally loved the red and the sliding action:)

I have the LG Vx9800/The V, which is the predessessor for the EnV, so I am guessing they are fairly similar. I love my 9800. It is a bigger and bulkier phone (the EnV is thinner and lighter), but if you do text message, it is nice to have the full keyboard. Haven't heard anything bad about the Chocolate, though I hear terrible things about the Razr.

So I would say the VX9800 or EnV if you like to check your email and have a bigger screen, if you text message, and if you don't mind a larger phone!

how to get around itunes's drm: after you download the song (in AAC format), burn the song to a cd. then, rip/re-import the song as an MP3 file. there you go - entirely new mp3 file with no drm restrictions.

The reviews on the chocolate have been mixed, I usually trust cnet's reviews on most stuff, and they claim battery life is sub-par, but not absolutely horrible.

I recently got a sony ericsson that I really like.

I didn't really look at the chocolate since verizon isn't really in this area.

I haven't heard anything about the Chocolate phones, but it has always disappointed me that they don't actually come with chocolate. It's a little too much like false advertising.

Stacer, I'll check out emusic. It's official: I can't recharge my account with Visa or MasterCard anymore on the site I was using.

I've also heard that the Chocolate isn't THAT incredible, but it's cute, it's functional, and it's free. Sounds good to me. :)

Cat, sliding action sounds vaguely dirty...

Jessica, thanks for the input. I would probably prefer a smaller phone and I don't text a ton. I basically just use my phone as a phone, but the extra goodies on the Chocolate would be fun I think.

Eve, thanks for the tip. I think I've inadvertently done that a couple of times, but I didn't really think about doing it on purpose. Do you lose quality at all?

Mike, yeah Verizon has pretty good coverage in all the major places I go to, which is why I've been with them for 4 years.

Jordan, word.
