Is it wise to embark on a 1,000 mile road trip with your boyfriend?
Maybe.
Will one of the two of you wind up stranded on the side of I-95 somewhere in rural South Carolina?
Quite possibly.
We're trying to get to Florida and have found cheap enough plane tickets, but the rental car is turning out to be very, very expensive. We've checked Kayak, Orbitz, carrentals.com and I even checked out whether my AAA membership would get me a good enough discount. The cheapest so far is $237 for a week. Does that seem a bit much to anyone else?

Have you tried booking a package deal on Expedia? Include the flight, hotel and car. Even if you don't end up using one it still ends up cheaper.
This was in today's Washington Post (inspiration!):
* Take the scenic route back from Florida with a deal from Hertz. Pay $1 a day (plus taxes) for an economy car for pickups April 8-June 30 from any of seven Florida airport locations, including West Palm Beach, Miami, Orlando and Fort Lauderdale. The catch? You must drop the car off at designated locations in one of 36 cities, including Washington and Baltimore. For example, a Hyundai Accent rented in Miami on April 25 and dropped off at Dulles International on April 27 is $14, including taxes. Rate of $1 daily applies to economy cars rented by Jan. 31 deadline; pay $2 a day by Feb. 28 and $3 a day by March 31. Larger cars are available for higher fees; an intermediate car, for example, starts at about $10 a day (plus taxes). Maximum rental period at reduced rates is 14 days. Request rate code 1WAY at http://www.hertz.com/ or call 800-654-3131.
Lilcis, well we found a really cheap flight on an airline's website and probably wouldn't be able to get the same deal with Expedia - they're usually a little more on the travel sites.
Laura, that is such an amazing deal. However, Jason's Spring Break is in March so it's a little late for us. But maybe we should go in June instead.
We use a site called "renalcars.com" or "rentacar.com" I can't remember which....we've always gotten good deals there and usually end up renting with Alamo. The price you quoted sounds about right for a week...life is expensive. But good luck finding something.
