It's Getting Close

My birthday is a little less than 2 months away. You may ask, Kelly, why are you telling us this now? We still have almost 2 months to buy you spectacular gifts and all the brie and dark chocolate your heart could desire.

Well, because it's a biggie. That's right. It starts with a

3

and ends with a

0.

Can you believe it? Well I guess if you know I was born in 1976, then yes, yes you can. I made my Auntie Victoria feel very old the other day by mentioning this fact, though.

I would like to discuss an idea that I've been ruminating on and have blogged about before. I think that any single woman who turns 30 should be able to register. Why should the smug marrieds get all the fun? Target has Club Wedd, where people get to run around with a scanner gun, wrecking havoc on Michael Graves-designed kitchenware and bread machines. I have had many engaged friends tell me of the fun.

Well, shoot. Just because I haven't gotten hitched yet, I don't get matching plates and nice sheets and a Kitchen Aid mixer given to me by loving family and friends as my rightful due? Stuff that I chose, that is exactly what I want? That seems grossly unfair.

I think Target, Crate & Barrel, Pottery Barn, etc. should start another registry: Club 30 or The 30 is the New 20 registry.* Any woman** about to turn 30 can register for what she really wants. Not only that, but she doesn't have to look to the guy schlepping along beside her and ask his opinion when really he's probably just thinking how long he has to do this before he can slip away to Electronics.

I in no way think a woman who is 30 is past marriage age. This just seems like a fair plan to me. Why did one of my peers get to receive posh presents at one point during her life without doing anything besides get married, while I'm still without a Kitchen Aid mixer. Not fair, is it?

Yes, I realize many women who have reached 30 are not without nice linens and dishes and appliances. But what about that waffle maker or egg poacher*** you've eyed, but couldn't justify buying? What about those sheets in an insanely high thread count that you have been drooling over, but your practical nature wouldn't allow? Or maybe it's just me. I would really like to prance around Target with a gun, zapping presents.

Just think about it, Target. I think you're missing out on a prospective goldmine. Plus, I think Target, as the most favorite store of pretty much any woman you ask between the ages of 22 and 50, has the power to pull it off.

* Feel free to enter in your own registry name ideas.
** Alright, I suppose guys could do this too, but would they want to?
*** I really want an egg poacher right now.

I'll vote for it, as long as it's retroactive to women who turned 30 before they instituted it. I'd love a waffle iron. Mmm, waffles. Makes me want to go make pancakes.

Remember when we had the decades birthday and Grandmas was 80, Mamaw was 50, I turned 30 and you turned 10? We had a big party at Aunt Daisy's house and you were swimming most of the day while I spent the day cooking stuff with Aunt Daisy to feed all the people who showed up. Now a couple of weeks ago I turned 50, you will be 30 and Mamaw will be 70. Too bad we can't do another decades celebration, ya know? I mean I wouldn't be able to do all of the cooking anymore - sadly. But it sure would be fun to carry that on.

I hate to say it, but I disagree. I don't think a woman should get to register for the mere fact that she's 30 and single. There are plenty of 30ish single women out there who've done NOTHING but wait for Mr. Right to come along.

However, I do think a woman who has done MANY things with her life should be rewarded. For instance, she's graduated from Law School. HELLO! If that isn't an occasion for registering I don't know what is!

Sorry for being a brat about it. I just get so angered by the women I see pining away for Mr. Right while still living at home, with no schooling and no career and just being a general burden on society. Hello sister, let me give you a hint on why you're not married yet. BECAUSE YOU'RE WORTHLESS!

Okay, that was really harsh. But you get my point, right?

Anyway, you can't register because you're not single and if it weren't for the whole 'living in two different states' issue you may very well have been engaged already. So just be patient.

Oh yeah, one more thing. One of the nice things about getting married 'later in life' is that you already have all the items you 'need' therefore you get to go crazy and register for all the items you simply 'want' yet are far to practical to pay those ridiculous prices. Hello Williams Sonoma!
