And The Answer Is No

Well, this is weird. I emailed them asking for a little more detail about the position. Their ad basically had the name of the firm and said they were hiring an associate. Upon googling the firm, NO webpage came up, but I did manage to look at it once the associate emailed me and I got the extension off of his email address.

After looking at the website some more, I had pretty much decided I would go in for the interview just for practice, but I didn't see it going anywhere. It's a VERY small firm, only 2 attorneys. Not really any work I'm interested in, a lot of litigation.

The email he sent was super informal, signed with his first name, and just saying got your resume, want to interview? So I wrote back and just said thank you for getting in touch with me. Since the ad wasn't very detailed, could he tell me a little about the firm and the position? Perfectly nice.

He emailed me back a half hour later to just say what the practice area was (not anything I have any experience or demonstrated interest in) and we could discuss it further if I came in for an interview. THEN 10 minutes after that, the partner emailed me and said all the time slots are full, thanks anyway.

Um, ok. I guess we don't like questions? Does that strike anyone else as a tad abrupt?

And Jason just said to me, "You are worth more than that." Thanks!

I'm not at the point of desperation yet, so I can still be indignant instead of despondent. :)

Yeah, you didn't want to work for them. They sound SHADY, if you ask me. You'd probably end up defending some lower-rung crime family or something gross like that.

So good on you for turning them down, because in my mind that's how it happened.

I think this is one time it has all worked out for the better. I worked for a litigator a few years ago, and I found that out of all the attorneys in the office he was the worst--cranky, never happy, work needed to be done yesterday kind of a guy. You're better off looking more. Good luck. :)

This is hilarious.

I agree, if thats how they respond to genuine interest on your part (and a concern not to waste their interview time) this place has problems that you want nothing to do with.

I agree. If when someone just asks a question, the senior partners go into full-blown defensive mode like they're dealing with a depo from the SEC, then it sounds like you are dealing with people who have things to be defensive about. It sounds like you are much better not working for Slim Shady, LLC and that they did you a huge favor.

at any rate, you see from the emails he sent that if you do work for them, you probably would have a hard time with the informal infrastructure and lack of clear communication.

you are NOT a beggar. this job is beneath you, listen to the boy.

Nem, I like your version a lot.

Eden, I've never had any desire to be a litigator so I think it's definitely worke out for the best.

El Genio, absolutely!

Miss Hass, yeah, I'm not verging on despondent at all anymore. But you know how sometimes someone acts completely anti whatever you think is the appropriate way to act and then you think, "Well, maybe I've got it wrong?" Yeah, not this time.

Mom, I think you and I should start a firm called Slim Shady, LLC.

Mary, yeah the informality of it kidn of threw me for a loop. I'm so tempted to ask around and see what sort of reputation they have in town.
