I just found out my temp job ends November 30th. I have mixed feelings. The obvious downside is that my paycheck stops in a couple of weeks. The upside is that I won't have to commute out to the 'burbs anymore. The commute has been really wearing on my clutch and my nerves.
Another upside is I won't have a boss that I feel the need to walk on eggshells around. OK, truth is, I might have a boss like that again, but some craziness happened right after I started here and I've been tiptoeing around ever since to ensure that the craziness does not happen to me too.
Another upside is that I won't be doing the same old mind-numbing paper shuffling. No, if I get another temp job I'll get to learn all new mind-numbing paper shuffling. At least learning the routine is interesting at first.
So really the ups outweigh the downs. But the down is a pretty big down.
I've already emailed all my staffing agencies to let them know. This week I was planning on getting on the ball with a huge resume blitz of the DC and Boston areas. This just gives me more of an impetus to make sure that happens.
The issue I'm debating right now is whether I should work 3 hours of OT tonight. I was planning on going home and doing job stuff, but 3 hours of time and a half will come in handy in a couple of weeks. I'm working OT Wednesday and Thursday, but then next week I'm only working two days because of Thanksgiving (Reason number 467 why it sucks to be a temp: no holiday or vacation pay). I'll probably end up staying tonight.
I'm tired of this. I just want a real job with real pay and real benefits.

When you get a job at a firm, it will suck just as bad -- just in different ways. Trust me.
Yes, but the difference is, I'll be making decent money, versus the crap pay I'm getting now, and I'll have benefits.
Bummer. Well you're right, maybe this will be the push you need. Still, pain in the neck in the meantime -- I'm sorry. :(
I think she's just one of those people that always has to complain about something.
GG, thanks for the sympathy. I'm crossing my fingers for you for Friday!
Neil, oh I am very happy I passed the Bar. But if no one will hire me as an attorney, it sort of makes it rough. Thus the job search continues.
Anon, yep that's me. You've figured me out.
Work your overtime -- you can do job stuff next week. Believe me, there's always another temp job around the corner. I actually really enjoyed temping, probably because I'd just left such a horrible job that it felt as if I was on paid vacation. One temp stint turned into a full-time job, but I spent probably a full month saying no, I didn't want it, I'd rather be a temp, just because I liked having no strings. Of course, once I was hired full-time, it took away a lot of the stresses I'd never realized I had (like not getting paid on holidays! And like low pay!). I don't know that there's really any point to this comment -- just wanted to tell you to hang in there, because things will work out eventually.
