My Christmas present is coming on Friday: a bread machine. We're not so much slaves to the calendar and presents have kind of become something that happens on or around the date in question. First and foremost, I had to figure out what I wanted and I'm really bad at that. My parents can chime in, but I believe we figured out what Jason was getting me on Christmas Day itself.
So yay! Bread machine!
Do you have any good bread machine recipes? I know it comes with a little book, so I'll check that out, but I'm especially interested in whole-grain recipes that don't use white flour (or not a lot of white flour. The whole wheat bread recipe in The Joy of Cooking uses more white flour than wheat, which doesn't seem quite right to me). But if there are any other recipes you adore, please share.

YAY! My dad got me a bread machine a couple of years ago and I have hardly bought any bread since. I'll give you his recipe. He's spent quite a while perfecting it and it's a delicious whole wheat one with no white and flax seed and oatmeal and all the good stuff!
(You'll just probably have to remind me to actually give it to you)
One tip that I have found with using a bread machine, you can put more whole wheat flour than it calls for, as long as the total amount of flour stays the same (say, 3 cups total flour and the whole wheat recipe call for 2 cups white and 1 cup wheat flour) - you can switch it up - I don't think I've ever done completely whole wheat flour but I have gone pretty close. Anyway, the trick is to double the amount of yeast, otherwise it comes out VERY dense. I have some good recipes in my ultimate bread machine book. I am a BIG FAN of the bread machine, although recently I use it more for making dough that then I make into pizza or cinnamon rolls or whatever. The other thing about bread machine bread is it gets moldy really quickly (like within 2-3 days), although I guess you could find a good storage container that might help. But that is one of the reasons I moved to making rolls, etc., that usually get eaten within a few days.
Ginna, that recipe sounds great. I'll be sure to bug you for it.
Molly, I didn't think of doubling the yeast. I have tried to substitute more wheat for white flour in recipes and have wound up with very dense bread - like a rock.
