I'm A Classy Dame

I had an interview this morning at a staffing agency. I got there fine, but when I sat down to fill out their info sheet on the computer I realized the slit in the back of my skirt was now located in the front of my skirt. No, I didn't put my skirt on wrong this morning. I'm not that bad. Apparently over the course of my traveling from my home to the District via Metro, my skirt managed to twist itself all the way around. I've had skirts that twisted a little bit and I'd have to readjust, but this was a first for a completely backwards skirt.

I glanced surreptitiously at the receptionist seated 5 feet away from me and when her head was down managed to lift myself up a little from the seat, hold the position, and twist the skirt back around the right way, without completely untucking my shirt. Let's hear it for swimmer thighs!

So I'm worried. A friend of mine tells me I worry too much, and I grant him that, yes, I do generally worry too much. But I think I have cause to be seriously worried at this point. My funds are rapidly decreasing and I'm worried about not making enough (or anything for that matter) this month and having no money to pay my bills in October. In fact, the funds I'm using right now are a cushion I gave myself at the beginning of the summer that I was hoping not to have to use and to just be able to pay right back. But I have to use it.

I hate money. I really don't want to be rich and to have everything. I just want enough to pay off my debt and someday own a little home.

And apparently the DC Court of Appeals has decided to make it lots of fun for those of us who haven't passed the Bar yet. They recently issued a decision severely limiting the ability of non-barred attorneys to do any real work in DC. So while the staffing lady told me I have a great resume and once I am admitted to the DC Bar I'll be fine, that won't be happening until around the beginning of next year probably. Swell. Oh and this is also assuming that I didn't completely blow the Multistate, which I'm increasingly believing in my heart that I did.

DC is the temp job capital of the world.

A friend's husband worked for quite a while as a temp while waiting to hear about the bar results, and for a while after the bar results. But he did make EXCELLENT money doing that, more than he does at his new permanent job.

Hopefully you'll find something soon. May not be glamorous work or anything, but as long as it's something to pay the bills until you can find the job you really want.

Good luck!

I am the queen of the slit in the wrong place. I think there are gnomes on the metro that turn your skirt around as you sit.

Not to be a stick in the mud or anything, but a non-barred attorney shouldnt be able to do any real work. Im a non-barred attorney, so is everyone else in the nation. Just because you went to school doesnt mean you learned what you needed to.

Jef, thanks for your thoughts.

G, yeah I'm hoping for that excellent money temp job. It can come along anytime now...

Jordan, darn skirt gnomes! I'll have to beware of them next time I wear a skirt into the District.

Mark, right. I knew I wasn't going to get any "real" work without being licensed, but apparently now in DC all you can get is the most basic, more like admin and paralegal stuff. They're being more picky about who they let do document review in some cases, which was what most temp attorneys were doing.

There are three in Northern Virginia that I know of...Old Town, Balley's and Springfield. I've never been the Balley's one although I've seen it from the road. Old Town can be jammed on a Saturday and Sprinfield's a bit larger. They have a better veggie selection than Old Town.
